Mussorgsky – A Visit Through "Pictures at (Victor Hartmann's) Exhibition."
In this lecture we will examine how a trivial painter’s exhibit lead to one of the symbols of Russian nationalistic music, involving the skills of two eminent Russian composers and an additional French composer. We will also establish why history has yet to resolve the dispute whether Programme Music is an important development of the 19th century, subsequent to the events of “The Spring of Nations” in 1848, or rather unneeded ‘musical crutches’.
